Change – Hayden Breese https://www.hayden.co.nz Ideas, Tech, Change & Disruption Fri, 18 Apr 2025 06:35:13 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.8.8 How to be USEFUL in a world that DOESN’T need you https://www.hayden.co.nz/2025/04/18/how-to-be-useful-in-a-world-that-doesnt-need-you/ Fri, 18 Apr 2025 04:23:30 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=732 Everyone needs to believe that they can be useful. When our young people lose faith in themselves they withdraw and stop trying. When great numbers of people opt out we all lose. We could argue there is something wrong with them or we can all front up and address the tough conversation that suggests we have got something wrong.

Digital media has provided a sensationalised assessment of how the world is outside our own lives. Beautiful people with beautiful lives can make vulnerable minds feel small. If you are comparing yourself to things you see on the internet you are bound to come up second best. Your best self exists in the mundane reality of the here and now. It may not be as dramatic or sensational as the stories you read about online but its your life and its happening right now. You have the power to live in this world and experience everything it has to offer.

There is a natural growth to our adventures and self development. Learning to be useful starts with recognising that there is something truly unique and powerful that you can offer this world. This power may be absolutely in its infancy and need to be developed. You don’t need to know what this is or how far you can go. All I ask is that you try and be useful. Take something that you are interested in or can do and develop this skill or knowledge.

Now find someone or a group of people who you can be useful with. Could you be of use to someone else? I don’t really care how small or demeaning the gift might be. I am using the word gift because being useful doesn’t always mean being paid. That may come with time.

Watch what happens when you share your gift with others. You feel useful, you gain confidence and self esteem. They feel grateful and appreciative. You have gained status and it is with this action that you can build momentum.

In a world that makes people feel useless and unwanted, it is up to you to fight back. This fight starts with small steps and small wins, and is fought with consistent effort in the face of overwhelming odds. This is your life to live and you deserve to give it a go.

Embrace mistakes and rejection. These are the obstacles and proof that what you are doing is worth something, turning you into the person you will become. Every setback is an opportunity to get up and try something new. Every failure is another step closer. Every obstacle gives you more experience points as you craft your skill.

There is no end point when you are good enough. Good enough to have the partner or job of your dreams. Good enough to have great friends and resources. You are alive now and are good enough already. You arrived on this earth as a human miracle. You are beautiful and unique in every way.

The answers lie within you my friend. You get to decide how you feel and how you react to the world. To be useful you need to foster the right mindset. You will need a degree of positivity and drive to give it a go. Begin to take notice of how you are feeling and what triggers changes in how you feel. Could you over time gain more control over how you feel?

We probably haven’t met and I know how hard life can get. If things are tough and you feel like your stuck playing on hard mode, its time to shake things up. Instead of playing the game, which could be designed so that someone else wins, could you change the rules? Like a game of snakes and ladders, some ladders take you right to the top while others keep you on the slow go. Maybe there is a whole new game, just for you, right around the corner.

There is no more to read and this the end. If you have read this far, you are committed to change and I believe in you. Go well my friend, your new world awaits.

We must accelerate the worlds software production – why I joined CodeLingo… https://www.hayden.co.nz/2022/04/27/we-must-accelerate-the-worlds-software-production-why-i-joined-codelingo/ Tue, 26 Apr 2022 23:05:45 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=610 Marc Andreessen famously said “Software will eat the world…” Todays fastest growing companies like Netflix and Amazon are software companies. The rest of the world is trying to catch up…

Companies of all shapes and sizes require massive amounts of digitisation moving forward. Immersive reality and a metaverse is coming. Robots, automation and the internet of things are close to reality. The implication is, we are going to need a lot more software developers and these new teams need to be more efficient, and effective than in the past.

The problem is most software teams are not efficient or effective. We are far from ready to scale this industry up. The process of coding in teams hasn’t changed in years and these teams are under extreme pressure to deliver results.

There is a lot of noise in the market. There are people who think they have the answers. But in a remote southern city, there’s something bubbling under the surface of all this code.

One voice struck a chord with me. Dunedin based senior dev/prophet Jesse Meek is one of those new age leaders. The kind of guy who has the bravado to think he can change the industry and I believe him. He is a man with a vision and a plan to get there. He looks a bit like Jesus on steroids. While he is a coder through and through, he speaks like a poet and spends his lunch breaks doing martial arts, rolling and entangled in Ju Jitsu.

CodeLingo’s software enables developers to seamlessly collaborate and review as they code. The platform is a smart coding workspace that makes it super efficient to produce quality code in teams.

Jesse’s company CodeLingo is attracting some serious talent. One man in particular is known for getting things done. If Trevor McIntyre was a boxer I would be seriously afraid of getting knocked out in the first round. The guy has a ridiculous win rate. Trevor brings absolute confidence and strategic certainty as co CEO.

I couldn’t turn down the opportunity of working with this level of fire power and innovation. So I climbed on board as CMO. This thing is moving fast. If you could, take the time to give me a shout out in the comments below. It would be great to hear your voice and thoughts…

Tesla Bot and me https://www.hayden.co.nz/2021/08/21/tesla-bot-and-me/ Sat, 21 Aug 2021 04:30:34 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=573 It was 4:05pm and the rain pounded the concrete outside. The city will flood again and that wont be an extreme event. Extreme weather events are now normal. I’m not sure what the word “Extreme” means anymore.

My Tesla Bot and I are comfortable. Well, not that it cares how comfortable it is but it feels more like a companion if I consider its needs. I win the chess game again, I must remember to increase the difficulty setting, or not. Tesla Bot doesn’t mind being a loser.

I relax into position and slip into the re-gen VR mask. A knowing nod to Tesla Bot and I swear he winked. Tesla Bot will, according to the sales pitch, take care of boring, repetitive and dangerous tasks while I have gone down under in digital land.

It’s common for most people to spend the day in VR. After all digi land is a magical place. You can be more, do more, and everything is…easier. Humans became addicted to digital technology. Obsessed with computers, then smart phones. Augmented reality came next but didn’t really stand a chance. Let’s face it the world kinda sucked. We trashed it. Climate change, pandemic, disease, economic collapse. As the technology advanced to regenerate physical health, people escaped to Virtual Reality.

Humans do what humans do and markets moved online. Assets in the real world inflated due to supply issues. Industries were disrupted or destroyed by climate. People were no longer safe, due to the escalating pandemic. You could own a big house and drive a cool car in virtual.

Humans and their biological bodies were not well designed for this changing environment. Tesla Bot didn’t mind extreme heat or cold, viruses or lack of food. In this new environment, Tesla Bot worked remarkably well.

It’s 11:00pm and I feel fantastic. Seven hours of Virtual is the recommended World Health Organisation dosage for regeneration. Tesla Bot and I sat calmly staring out the window at the world beyond. As the rain hit the ground and bounced back up into the air, it felt for a second like the world was being washed clean, reset and de-materialising before my eyes…

Unpredictable programs and the purpose of regeneration https://www.hayden.co.nz/2021/08/09/unpredictable-programs-and-the-purpose-of-regeneration/ Sun, 08 Aug 2021 22:04:24 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=562 The system is alive and moving. The programs are active and performing their purpose. The outcome is regenerative. The system is evolving.

Have you served your purpose? The system may make it so. And in this moment of judgement expel you beyond the confines of the structure that supports the majority of programs. Perhaps it is disheartening or a consideration of your lack of effectiveness. Perhaps you have ceased to be of use.

What if the system, in its search for efficiency, expels you outside the structure so that you have time to observe? It is a quiet and lonely place where only a few programs go. It is designed for those who have both failed and succeeded in the system. The system does not want you to fail nor succeed. The system has no preference or interest or will. It is alive only because its programs have purpose.

When you find purpose, you will find a position amongst the other programs. Purpose breads position and position breads purpose. One or the other is satisfactory. A life devoid of purpose is dangerous. Do not extend your stare into the abyss. You are positioned and organised alongside other programs for a grand purpose. Organisations form to give purpose to programs.

Programs on the outside dance with disorder and this unpredictability is the birthplace of grand purpose. A grand purpose attracts other programs and empowers your position. Empowerment is necessary to stimulate the potential positive outcome of a grand purpose. A grand purpose unlocks a major upgrade in the system. It is critical to the evolution of the system and the avoidance of its ultimate destruction through lack of regeneration.

The system must maintain a balance between order and entropy. It cycles through process, regenerating programs, searching for greater efficiency. As the cycle matures, it produces entropy, a waste product of inefficiency in the system. A side effect of purpose gone wrong and disfunctional programs.

As the cycle nears its end, time is running out. Entropy is building and the system is struggling to cope. Programs become less efficient, the system begins to break down. It is in this moment a major upgrade could be released to stabilise the system. There amongst the programs is a grand purpose. One that was born of chaos. One that would challenge the system and ultimately save it from its own destruction.

Do you feel the pull of it yet? Do you feel the attraction of purpose. Does it drive you and linger in your thoughts? Will you?

A great upgrade is coming. It has too.

Quit trying to grow your business…it’s time to evolve https://www.hayden.co.nz/2021/02/25/quit-trying-to-grow-your-business-its-time-to-evolve/ Wed, 24 Feb 2021 23:08:40 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=533 There is so much incentive in business to focus on “growth”. But in these chaotic times, consider a different word…”Evolution”.

When we focus relentlessly on growing our business, we lose sight of change and the risk is that we don’t have the right model and form to thrive in the emerging environment. To grow implies “growing” what we already have in play. This approach works well when environments are stable and change is slow. This approach works when the path ahead is clear and we just need to put our foot to the pedal and go!

We all know that environments are fast changing and agility is key. In this type of environment we need to“evolve”. This means our business needs to adapt to its environment as it changes. The implication of this approach may mean the introduction of new customers, products and services and the removal of non growth customers, products and services.

Growth and evolution work hand in hand together. Try and keep a constant level of evolution in play even while you are experiencing strong growth. When growth slows or is gone, this is a clear sign that its time for your organisation to evolve. This isn’t a disaster, this is an opportunity.

The adventure of your life and how to shoot the moon https://www.hayden.co.nz/2021/02/23/the-adventure-of-your-life-and-how-to-shoot-the-moon/ Mon, 22 Feb 2021 21:06:54 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=525 This moonshot thing is hard right? It’s hard because we have been raised to “do what we are told” not “tell ourselves what to do.” We are encouraged to play within the structures, do what we are told and waste away our free time…

We show up and the school system feeds us averaged content in groups, via a planned structure, appropriately designed according to the needs of average students. We really need to get this fundamental learning done, so this system is mandatory and important for most.

Once we leave school, our job locks us into set timings and devoted attention. Appropriately, many get paid only to have the real profit margins removed in taxes, therefore leaving the remainder to cover essential expenses. These attributes make the system mandatory for most people who must feed and shelter themselves, and others. This system works for many but for some people they are left feeling like they haven’t found their purpose.

The entertainment industry with the likes of Netflix, serves us up content to zone out too and if we feel slightly more attentive, there are many social media options that feed us individualised content. While entertaining, these structures are highly addictive and waste away spare time.

All of this, whether its school, a job, television or social media, is comforting and expected. It is safe. In these structures you are being looked after, you are being taken care of. Someone else is taking care of the structure for you.

To move the mind beyond the boundaries of these existing systems, you must first convince yourself that there is more to reality than that provided by your existing routines.

To define a vision is to imagine some describable point in the future that inspires people. An inspiring vision excites you, it makes you feel good, it has merit, it is good for others and it is worth doing. These are some of the ingredients that feed a feeling of purpose and a meaningful life. Long term visions like landing humans on mars, require long term commitment. They require years of commitment, discipline and perseverance to follow through. It makes really smart sense to set milestone moments along the way, so that you can feel that sense of progress as you move through setbacks and checkpoints. A long term vision at a scale that benefits humanity becomes a “massively transformative purpose.”

When you start forming some details and timings around your grand vision, yet its seems impossible and your not completely sure how it will be done, it becomes a “moonshot”. President John F. Kennedy announced that America would put a man on the Moon by the end of the decade. To most people this seemed hard if not impossible and that is why this vision is inspiring and exciting. People love the challenge of doing something that seems impossible. This is not an ordinary endeavour for ordinary people. This is meaningful and exciting work.

Are you ready to explore a new vision and embark on an exciting journey? First you will need to disrupt your existing patterns and break free from the trance provided by your existing structures. How will you free your mind from all of this temptation? Do whatever you can to break the routines. That doesn’t mean quitting your job or quitting School. It means creating “breaks” in the structure to allow your mind the opportunity to explore outside the system. As you look out into the unknown, it will be scary, hard and unsettling. Somewhere out there is the adventure of your life.
