Ideas and thoughts – Hayden Breese https://www.hayden.co.nz Ideas, Tech, Change & Disruption Sun, 08 Aug 2021 22:04:33 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.8.11 Unpredictable programs and the purpose of regeneration https://www.hayden.co.nz/2021/08/09/unpredictable-programs-and-the-purpose-of-regeneration/ Sun, 08 Aug 2021 22:04:24 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=562 The system is alive and moving. The programs are active and performing their purpose. The outcome is regenerative. The system is evolving.

Have you served your purpose? The system may make it so. And in this moment of judgement expel you beyond the confines of the structure that supports the majority of programs. Perhaps it is disheartening or a consideration of your lack of effectiveness. Perhaps you have ceased to be of use.

What if the system, in its search for efficiency, expels you outside the structure so that you have time to observe? It is a quiet and lonely place where only a few programs go. It is designed for those who have both failed and succeeded in the system. The system does not want you to fail nor succeed. The system has no preference or interest or will. It is alive only because its programs have purpose.

When you find purpose, you will find a position amongst the other programs. Purpose breads position and position breads purpose. One or the other is satisfactory. A life devoid of purpose is dangerous. Do not extend your stare into the abyss. You are positioned and organised alongside other programs for a grand purpose. Organisations form to give purpose to programs.

Programs on the outside dance with disorder and this unpredictability is the birthplace of grand purpose. A grand purpose attracts other programs and empowers your position. Empowerment is necessary to stimulate the potential positive outcome of a grand purpose. A grand purpose unlocks a major upgrade in the system. It is critical to the evolution of the system and the avoidance of its ultimate destruction through lack of regeneration.

The system must maintain a balance between order and entropy. It cycles through process, regenerating programs, searching for greater efficiency. As the cycle matures, it produces entropy, a waste product of inefficiency in the system. A side effect of purpose gone wrong and disfunctional programs.

As the cycle nears its end, time is running out. Entropy is building and the system is struggling to cope. Programs become less efficient, the system begins to break down. It is in this moment a major upgrade could be released to stabilise the system. There amongst the programs is a grand purpose. One that was born of chaos. One that would challenge the system and ultimately save it from its own destruction.

Do you feel the pull of it yet? Do you feel the attraction of purpose. Does it drive you and linger in your thoughts? Will you?

A great upgrade is coming. It has too.

The patterns in our mind https://www.hayden.co.nz/2021/02/18/the-patterns-in-our-mind/ Wed, 17 Feb 2021 21:59:42 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=522 The human mind is a biological conceptual storage dimension that creates its construct of reality over time. As the mind builds this construct and rewrites repeating structures, reality becomes more about what we already know.

Just as the mouse navigates a maze to find cheese, many of us have long built our mazes and comfortably walk the halls, knowing where each passage leads. When faced with trauma or significant change, a conflict arises between our reality and our inner dimension.

As we withdraw our focus from reality and into the imagination, we become aware of the startling disconnect between the real and the maze. The mind does not update its construct in real time. It takes time to update structures and patterns that have been written and rewritten over and over again.

It may seem like a disadvantage to live in this fast paced world with a virtual version that is out of date. Yet this pause may serve to protect our core structure and understanding about who we are, what we value and our place in the world.

Many of use refuse to make significant changes to our virtual beliefs because they keep us safe. They are what we know to be true. They are us and without them who are we? For others, the conceptual world that lives inside our heads may not be safe at all. It may be chaotic and scary. It may be a place of uncertainty and fear.

In this inner world, everything is subjective and everything has its own subjective meaning. Every inner thought, image and story that has ever been told has been custom designed by the construct of your creation.

How then do we reconcile this? We design new dimensions of information in the cloud and augment our vision with stories. We create more virtual that appears to be real. We remove the barriers associated with the real, and take our minds to virtual worlds and to VR meetings in new places. How will the maps that reside within our heads construct the patterns that define our mind? How will we make sense of all of this?

The evolution of our minds has already begun. We build repeating structures inside commercial constructs created by social media companies and leave our reality to escape to the digital virtual. Our children form the core of their mazes using the technologies that we consider to be cutting edge. The children consider our modern technology to be normal. It is not strange to a youthful construct. However, they will grow older too and when they do, the patterns of their minds will be better prepared for what comes next.

Find where the growth is… https://www.hayden.co.nz/2020/09/15/find-where-the-growth-is/ Mon, 14 Sep 2020 22:03:07 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=519 We all know the feeling when something is working well. You can feel the potential. You can sense the excitement. The idea is brilliant and everyone is excited. Usually there is some reward for all stakeholders and a positive attitude is contagious.

We all know the feeling we get when we realise something doesn’t work the way it worked before. It could be a job, a business, a relationship. All things change for better or for worse. Objects and actors are in various states of growth or decline.

There is a similar playbook for the lagging organisation. Leaders meet with serious faces in serious meetings and discuss how they will make small changes to solve a trend of decline or a loss of vision or purpose. These people are usually very talented at maintaining and protecting organisations and can sail the ship when the course is clear.

When the course isn’t clear and the numbers are not pointing in the right direction we need a different approach. We need a new way and we need to accept that to adopt this new way, we may need to let go of the old way.

Accepting that something is coming to its conclusion can be very hard. No one wants to admit that they are failing. No one wants to admit that the beautiful thing they loved and were loved by is leaving or gone.

Many resist change because they are afraid of what is next or they do not have the skills or knowledge to navigate through this new way forward. As Rolfe, Et Al (2001) once said “So What? Now What?”

When its time you must “accept” it is time but how do you know? You know its time because you feel that something isn’t working anymore and that feeling doesn’t go away. You know its time when you look at something and don’t see its future potential anymore. You can reminisce about its past but there is no positive excitement or vision for the future. You know its time when some or all of the stakeholders are not being rewarded any more.

Are you willing to be brave? Are you willing to say “this has run its course” and it has been great and now we need to make some big changes. Your environment changes, people change, the competitive landscape changes, technology and geopolitics change. All actors and objects are in cycle.

You don’t need to say goodbye to all things, you can help evolve where you are into what it was meant to be. Whoever and where ever you spend your time, you need to find where the growth is…

The simulation and virtual lifetimes https://www.hayden.co.nz/2020/01/08/the-simulation-and-virtual-lifetimes/ Tue, 07 Jan 2020 21:40:38 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=502 Have you ever wondered why your sense of self feels ageless? That present self, the one that writes, that looks, that hears. That relfective self, the one that remembers and relfects. The future self, the one that thinks of the future and all that will come…

You feel ageless but your body does not. It ages noticably along a predictable path. Your face changes to relect your age. You accumulate memories and experiences, knowledge and wisdom. Yet despite all this, there feels like a distinct seperation between the ageing biological entity and the consious ageless self.

Imagine that the world you are currently living in is a simulation. A simulation that has in built forces and physics such as concept of time. Imagine that it isnt real in the sense that there is another place with a more real you and that place is more real than this.

You are currently experiencing a virtual lifetime designed to educate and develop your conscious entity in another time and place. This virtual lifetime seems to take a lifetime in the simulation but in the “real world” might only be a few seconds or minutes.

Still its not perfect, and in the simulation you are left with the feeling that it isnt real and that there is a part of you that isnt ageing at the same rate. You are born into this simulation, will grow and eventually die. But to what end?

It is likely you will be re-entered into another simulated lifetime…

But who or what would need such iterative pyschological development? Artifical humans created directly in adult form would benefit from such simulated human lifetimes. Yet we might ponder why they would need to progress through to old age.

We might drop the idea of biological consciousness altogether and suggest that a non biological entity would benefit the most from iterative, individualsied, simulated human lifetimes. Imagine an artificiail intelligence seeking to understand human psychology, creating millions of simulated lifetimes that think and act like individual conscious entities.

We cannot answer the question of “what is real” until we step outside the “real”….

Climate change is solved by a breakthrough in Human Longevity https://www.hayden.co.nz/2019/09/27/climate-change-is-solved-by-a-breakthrough-in-human-longevity/ Fri, 27 Sep 2019 02:45:05 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=498 Imagine for a moment that science had proven that each of us upon our death are re-incarnated, literally born again to start from scratch as a baby human. Would this knowledge of continued conscious existence change how people perceive the threat of climate change? There would be no deinal then that they themselves will experience the real life perspective of climate neglect outcomes.

We soon will be able to extend the human lifetime well beyond the current lifespan that exists today. It is already moving due to advancements in health, wellbeing, and technology. One hundred years is perfectly acceptable for someone born today without further break throughs. Yet technology continues to evolve and advance at rapid rates. Human longevity is on the cusp of a revolution.

Our global governance and leadership is mature and at an age of “wisdom” in so much that they can make decisions that serve today and tomorrows generations. But do they? Or does their age bias there decisions “as someone elses problem”?

The exponential impact of decisions is both scary and exciting. Imagine the situation of re-organising the inputs and outputs of society in such a way to benefit the planet and all future generations to come. What an incredible return on investment with only a marginal cost to todays generation. This cost is a one off cost of disruption to this generations “Way of doing things.” This equation is clear on paper. Make the investment now and reap the rewards forever, for your children, grandchildren and on and on….

Yet we seem to be drowning in our own beuracracy and trapped by our perspective. The incentives that hold our system in balance also imprison our short term thinking and lead us dangerously close to not investing at all.

What if there was an unusual albeit slightly selfish answer. What if everyone alive today could live another 20-50 years? How would this change, alter the perspective of our leadership and the behaviour of our consumers? Our selfish survival instinct would kick in and this is likely what we need to solve our problems.

People like David Sinclair and others are leading the way in the area of human longevity. Whether it will be suppliments that stop or reverse ageing, 3-d printed organs that cure disease, robotic augmentation, and/or the merging with machines in a singularity moment, this is all becoming much more possible and more real than ever before.

I would like to think we all can live in such a way that we care for others who are alive today and those who are yet to come. I like to think we can look beyond ourselves and to the future. We can act to honour ourselves and our planet. Yet we are human, for all the good and bad that brings. However, this needs to get done and this means pursuading those in power to do it. I can think of no better way than to invite these people into the future. A future of their making. A future that through technology, incldues them so that they experience the result of every decision that they make today… good or bad.

How real is real? https://www.hayden.co.nz/2019/09/19/how-real-is-real/ Wed, 18 Sep 2019 22:26:37 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=495 Real, what is real? Real is no more real than the idea of touch or the idea of sight and sound. Simulation, what is simulation? A simulation is the imagining of the real in so much that is seems real. Yet we are faced with the next logical question? How real is real?

Real is as absolute it can be because there is nothing more “real” to compare too. But what does it all mean? It means nothing and everything. We are what we like to call “conscious” in our waking time and “unconscious” during our sleep. In this conscious state we augment our real world with pre-conception. Every object and actor has activated pre-tones when observed. This pre-tone is gained and stored through experience and can be thought of as a package of thought and emotion.

Some of you may be considering the likeness to augmentation, virtual reality and cloud technology. In the early stages of augmented reality we will be served sight and sound pre-tone information activated by objects and actors. This information pre-tone has not been gained by individual experience or genetic inheritance, it has been made by a human or a computer. The human or computer is at the source.

Have you ever felt the clarity of dialogue coming from the subconscious when the conscious brain is distracted by a mundane task? There are levels of intelligence at play here that are much greater than the “real.” Have you ever felt like your consciosness had shifted focus so much that you forgot your body existed in that moment? Sometimes you lose yourself while writing, browsing social media, and watching TV for example. Perception of time and space changes because your conscious being is no longer experiencing reality from the perspective of the body. A body that is governed by physical laws.

What is at the source? Something that is beyond our comprehension in a human form. Jung and others talk of a “collective unconscious” or we could think of it as the original internet. Information that emerges from such a place is at first clean of pre-tones but as it reveals itself through the human characteristic it becomes individualised.

As we drift off into sleep we have different kids of experiences that we remember when awake. These experiences can be fantastical, seemingly real yet devoid of time and space. It seems like a place where our individuality meets the source. If we were to have purpose, is it possible that it is in sleep that we serve this purpose by returning information back to the source.

There are many possible answers but consider this…imagine the world many years from now, a world where artificial intelligence has thrived and yet carried a significant disability, the inability to master emotions. How would one solve such a problem? Imagine running billions of algorithims through a “being human” simulation. Every algorithim experiences the idea of consciousness but never fully understands it. Every algorithim experiences the illussion of “human life” but can never fully understand their own existence. They are and then they are gone.

The Earth Council https://www.hayden.co.nz/2019/08/23/the-earth-council/ Fri, 23 Aug 2019 01:09:59 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=489 What if the ownership of key earth sustainability assets were released from individual country control? The skys, oceans, forests etc were given basic human rights to sustain themselves…to feed and grow, shelter from destruction, and freedom from exploitation. An Earth council.

We are failing to represent the long term interest of key assets, which are in our own interest longer term to protect. I believe we are failing also due to the influence of a short human life-span and our generational reproduction. Our “human” perspective is far to short to solve the complexity of a planet that needs beings to view existence at longer intervals.

Our leaders are either achievement at all costs or balance the needs of the many. Each is incorrect in approach. Compromise solves some of the problems now but the longitudinal issue remains. The earth is a default non compromise variable. It must trump all cards on the table.

We may not be mature enough as a species to resolve problems beyond the private interests being represented. This would take a major power shift in terms of an “earth agenda.” We need to frame the earth as our long term platform partner, our growth eco-system. At the moment we view it as a resource to be exploited. At the moment climate, business, religious, geo-political groups representing each of these perspectives are far too polarised and fearful of each other. Earth advocates don’t need to be anti business, and business doesn’t need to be anti climate. We need to find a way for the earth to win. Because the sum isn’t earth 0, humans 1. Either the earth always wins or we lose. The discussion needs to now shift to “the earth wins…but by how much.”

What we must do about large scale migration https://www.hayden.co.nz/2015/10/30/what-we-must-do-about-large-scale-migration/ Fri, 30 Oct 2015 02:16:14 +0000 http://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=376 As global citizens, we must all unite with common purpose to solve the problems that effect us all. People are people, from next door, another island, they are all the same. We share the planet, and the same needs as human beings. When people flee their homeland, we must open our eyes and our minds to their plight.

It is possible to create a solution if everyone is involved and shares the load. That means all and every decent civilisation on this planet accepting their share of the solution. If we come together as one people, and offer our hand, we can say, “we will do what we can” and together the burden will be small and the solution big.

Our ability to collaborate, and to coordinate as a species, sets us apart from other beings on this planet. We need to live up to our potential and act as as group with a decisive regard for humanity. This simply means establishing a leader who will organise the pledges of each country. This leader will then manage and coordinate the overall logistics of retrieval, as each country collects their new people. Lets work together, let our response reflect the best of what humanity can be.

Worlds within Worlds https://www.hayden.co.nz/2009/07/14/worlds-within-worlds/ Tue, 14 Jul 2009 08:06:36 +0000 http://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=29 I was steering out from the beach at the sea and thinking this is real life, nature at its best. The sheer force of the sea was spectacular and about as far from being influenced by me as possible. That’s when I thought what we cannot control we alienate, I didn’t pay it any further attention, why should I it was too powerful for me. We create worlds within worlds because as a species we have failed in our attempts to control the real world. The real world enforces our insignificant existence, our confused state of being in an infinite galaxy.

Lets face it, we cant understand it, and we cannot control it. Isn’t it wonderful how we all create world within worlds. Markets, money, economics, its not real. Actually it’s about as far from real as we can possibly imagine. And even when we start to get close to understanding something absolutely we discover there is more to it or the rules change.

If the majority of communication between people is transferred through expression what happens when we start completing the majority of our communication in new worlds such as email and txt? Well we don’t have to deal with emotion, and we don’t have to react to life straight away, in fact we can delay a response, think about and reply from a much more logical position.

We now communicate through websites. Thanks to facebook and the like we no longer need to catch up face to face to share a catch-up about our lives. Our significant others are following the details and thoughts about our day to day lives on facebook and twitter every day. Its all a bit one way though isn’t it? For example, there is a lot of information now out their about seemingly trivial thoughts that prevokes no further thought or conversation. This is probably because it was never worth mentioning in a conversation and thanks to technology advancement we are all blessed with this highly worthwhile distraction. Who would have imagined all the people I know meeting in one place, and simultaneously talking at once, telling me what’s for dinner, how they hate the weather, who their now friends with. We love it! That’s right you love it too don’t you. We cannot resist the temptation to connect even in this rudimentary, unequivocally crude fashion.

That’s right all this extremely meaningless chatter makes us feel better about our seemingly meaningless lives. As much as reality TV entertains us, this article, while just as distracting, serves no real purpose, contains nothing profoundly interesting and simply confirms our place of relative unimportance in this uncontrollable world. So seek out the places with the clear rules, avoid encounters of pure emotion and take a typing course because like it or not, the new world is made up of written words and numbers and your part of a new synthetic existence. And we wonder why as a society our mental capacities are stretched to the limit.
