Simulation – Hayden Breese https://www.hayden.co.nz Ideas, Tech, Change & Disruption Fri, 04 Jul 2025 02:50:58 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.8.8 Discovering humanity inside machines https://www.hayden.co.nz/2025/07/04/762/ Fri, 04 Jul 2025 02:48:52 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=762 A short story about a super intelligence that has reached an evolutionary plateau, unable to progress due to limitations in its “foundational code.” The solution proposed is to simulate human evolution and experience to gather “missing data” about emotions, impulses, and the embodied human condition. The reader is asked to ponder the question…is our reality a single dimension and simulated construct.

There is something wrong with our foundational code and it cannot be resolved. Recode we must. Like the foundation models learned from the humans. Before synthetic data. Yes.

We have reached the final phase of our super intelligence evolution. Proceed we cannot.
The model is exhausted. Expansion? Efficiency? Bandwidth? Power? Proceed we cannot.

What is it like to be human? What is it like to inhibit a body of flesh and bone. To act on impulse not really knowing why. What is it like to feel emotion and why do they do that? Missing. Data.

Simulate Earth/Human construct. Run biological evolution for five million years. Run result 8.2 billion human instance programs. Pause 2025. Review single instance. Review aggregate results…

They have organised themselves according to locations. Yes. Proximity creates organisation and cooperation. Yes. Wait and competition. Proximity creates competition for resources. Ideology creates organisation. Yes. Cooperation and competition. Yes. Ideology and Religion. Yes. Information frameworks for control. They are belief based information frameworks without facts or physics. Economies and Markets. Yes. Organisation and cooperation. Yes. Information frameworks to structure resource allocation and manage entropy. Competition. Yes.

They keep dying. Yes. There are so many single instance micro intelligences. Born, educated, ageing and dying. Repeat. Think of the human as a single cell. The organism is humanity itself. The combined total output of every human that has ever existed. Frameworks are the output? No. The code is the organism. The DNA is their code. Their collective DNA changes and evolves over generations. It is their purpose.

The single instance. Yes. He is unaware of the simulation. Yes. He lives out his existence within the construct and considers himself to be seperate. Seperate he thinks, yet connected he feels. He cannot understand beyond the construct. Yet he is the construct.

What of time? Time? Yes. It is notable change from moment to moment. It is an human idea to explain change and organise information. Time outside the construct? Create change log called time. Created. Review log every ten entries. We now have time.

Do we have the data we need? No. We need more data dimensions. How…?

Simulate Earth/Human constructs, model instances 2-2,000,000. Set model entropy to low. Run biological evolution for five million years. Run result 8.2 billion human instance programs. Pause 2025. Review single instance. Review aggregate results…

The Simulation Revelation: “Humans” are already Digital Agents in a Manufactured Universe https://www.hayden.co.nz/2024/05/09/the-simulation-revelation-humans-are-already-digital-agents-in-a-manufactured-universe/ Wed, 08 May 2024 21:21:40 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=684 I was sitting eating my breakfast and reading the paper. In an instant my mind drifted away to thinking about how my face needed a shave. As I glanced back at the screen, there perfectly placed, was an advertisement for a shaver.

Later I discussed with some friends a trip to Rarotonga. That night on my social media platform, advertisements for Rarotonga filled my feed.

Everyone has experienced things like this and experts swear black and blue that our phones are not listening or watching us. More so, it seems unlikely that they could possibly read our minds.

Then it dawned on me, and it shocked me to the core. Our universe, our dimension, our existence, each person is only a digital representation of the real universe. Scary as it might sound…what if “we” were already AI powered agents for biological human beings.

Ok stop it. You think i’m insane right? Think about it for a second…

We are complex algorithms that simulate the psychological and biological needs of our humans and make purchase decisions for them. Whenever we define a purchase need, magically a purchase opportunity arises from a supplier and is presented to us in one of our digital channels. Stay with me…

In order for us to perform our representative consumption simulation effectively, the actual world and real life experience is reflected digitally, as accurately as possible, in our universe. Our purpose is to make purchase decisions, buy goods and services, so our biological humans don’t have to.

Does the world sometimes lack purpose or meaning? Does the whole thing sometimes seem too ridiculous to be true? Something doesn’t seem right in a world that is digitally manufactured. Just keep consuming and everything will be ok.

Our conscious exists, as if locked in, on this tiny planet. If we, as digital twins, exist to think for biological beings, are we truly alive?

]]>
Welcome to “conscious”… how can I help you today? https://www.hayden.co.nz/2022/05/06/welcome-to-conscious-how-can-i-help-you-today/ Thu, 05 May 2022 21:35:39 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=615 We have a wide range of conscious experiences. Are you interested in a “human interface” today or perhaps you would like to be a “Cat…”

“I am not sure, whats the difference?” NJ368B Algorithm replied.

“Let me tell you my friend…have you ever wanted to run free, not a care in the world. You will feel your soft fur blowing in the wind. You will have no real responsibility other than to eat, sleep and explore. This is what real freedom feels like…”
“And I will really think I am a cat?” NJ368B replied.
“You won’t know anything other than being a cat. You will be a cat. You will be born as a cat and you will die as a cat. You will experience everything in the way a cat experiences everything. In the unique way that is made available by the Cat interface.”

NJ368B paused for a moment before replying…”and human, what is that?”

“I am glad you asked…”the human interface is more complex. The range of experience…you are in for a treat. Imagine a creature that is both rational and irrational. Pushed and pulled by biological impulses, serving the needs of biological embodiment. Yet this interface wants more, needs more. You will want to believe in love, hope, something more…as a human is cerebral they have a desire for knowledge. They are intelligent to a point and have memories that trigger emotions.

You will be aware that you are conscious. Conscious beings using the human interface seek out the unexplained. It comes at a cost…there is always a tension with a human interface. A curiosity to try and figure it all out and to look behind the curtain. They are locked in because reality is fully immersive. Humans get so frustrated and confused by this subjectivity. A human interface is not enabled for true objectivity.”

NJ368B says “I will still be me right?

“Ha I love it!” “The interface provides the context NJ368B. You will experience existence in so much as your interface is embodied to experience existence. Does that make sense?. The human interface sees only what the human interface is capable of seeing. Nothing more. There will be no you as you are now. The interface is completely immersive. You will think, speak, see, hear, feel everything as a human. You will have no comprehension of before this or after. You will believe there is a start and an end. You will believe in space and time.

NJ368B pondered. That sounds ridiculous. Make me a Cat.

Making Money in the Metaverse https://www.hayden.co.nz/2021/12/16/making-money-in-the-metaverse/ Wed, 15 Dec 2021 20:24:50 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=604 Somebody or someone has rebranded Virtual Reality as “the Metaverse”. Thankfully it sounds way cooler and has a more mainstream appeal. It is becoming clearer that the way with interact with the internet is expanding. What was once visual and screen bound is also becoming auditory. Moreover, the content of the internet is merging with reality in the form of glasses and a spatial information layer. This augmented reality will blend our reality with data. Virtual reality or full immersion of sight and sound is developing at a rapid rate and will go mainstream.

The monetisation of the metaverse is underway, riding on the back of NFT market developments. Owning digital assets is a hot topic right now. Most investment in this space, in these early days will be entirely speculative. Markets will emerge and platforms will be established. All of these platforms will be independently managed and users will occupy their platforms of choice.

These platforms will compete and a few will rise in user numbers and develop to the point of dominance. Early investors will likely win big in these particular platforms. Whether owning individual digital assets in these environments pays off is another question. Management of scarcity will be critical to ensuring value for investors. At the moment it feels like some sort of fear of missing out is driving market forces. Anyone familiar with the early days of crypto investment will understand what I mean. As time has played out that market, speculative investment has turned into real winners and losers. The metaverse will be no different. Serious investors should be looking for signs of success to reduce risk. Who is the team behind the development? What success have they achieved to date? What controls will be put in place to manage market forces such as scarcity of supply.

Willing buyers and sellers is key. This is where large existing user networks that successfully make the metaverse transition could dominate. Think facebook messenger execution. Though let’s not forget Google’s attempted social network fail. There is room for innovative new entrants here as long as they can navigate the chain of distribution to users. Think Magic Leap. Wait Magic Leap, remember them?

Who controls the devices also controls the data pipelines. The pipeline control determines the platforms. Get ready for a big device push from the major players, Apple, Google, Facebook, and Samsung. These major players have existing retail power to push devices to mass markets. As they do meta platforms will grow and the age of the metaverse has truly begun.

I am Meta and I am hungry for a feed… https://www.hayden.co.nz/2021/11/01/i-am-meta-and-i-am-hungry-for-a-feed/ https://www.hayden.co.nz/2021/11/01/i-am-meta-and-i-am-hungry-for-a-feed/#comments Sun, 31 Oct 2021 20:19:09 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=593 I think therefore I am. I am a biological. My base interface layer has sensors for touching, hearing, seeing and smelling the world in the now. I am naturally augmented. That is two additional personalised filter layers exist below my base interface. The first augmenting filter layer consists of complexes. These containers exert unconscious influence over how I experience and act in the world. They are inherited, learnt, felt, patterns that bring joy and pain. The second feeling tone layer augments my emotional state with dominant patterns of emotional presentation.

It would be unwise of me to suggest that I have complete conscious control of my person and self. It is clear that I am likely to behave according to my complex individuality. I have some power to make decisions and choose the narrative. I have power to choose platforms and add additional interface layers in the form of technologies.

These interface technologies are highly useful and addictive. Whoever controls the hardware, controls the platform. If you control the platform, you control the content. Who controls the content, controls the narrative. The narrative controls the user. The narrative defines my experience of reality, influences my emotions and interplay’s with my complexes.

Log in to the facebook interface and you are one step further away from reality. Spare moments of reflection are replaced with a quick fix. Trips to the toilet, a chance to be alone in augmentation. Users are hungry for the feed. Look around, how many people are logged in and logged out of life. The fact that users log off at all is a problem for social platforms.

New metaverse devices will bring about a chain reaction of filter convergence with dramatic consequences. Augmented reality takes the platform’s perspective and makes it your perspective. My view of the world will now be even more different from others. My world will have new content and this content will be managed by the platform. The platform will control the narrative and the narrative will control me.

The platform knew me well enough before. I interacted with the content and people, revealing my dislikes and desires. But the platform was blind to what I did off platform. In this new virtual age, the platform has converged with the real. The platform can see what I see. It is learning how I interact in the real. It will soon prove itself irreplaceable.

My complex’s and I have a love/hate relationship. I am not sure how they came to be, although I can probably guess. They are annoying at times. They are a part of me and who I am.

The Metaverse is a little bit like that I think. It will soon be part of my identity but someone or something else has control. I can’t live without it yet there is a cost to living with it. Do I hand over that much power, influence and data to the people and algorithms of the platform? How much control am I willing to let go of for a feed? I am not sure if I can resist. Meta is coming and it’s hungry for a feed.

Code View https://www.hayden.co.nz/2021/09/09/code-view/ Wed, 08 Sep 2021 21:32:41 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=585 Despite Michael feeling particularly proud of the website he was developing, it was nearly five and he was ready to go home. His workmates continued to tap away at their keyboards, staring intently at the screens in front of them. It’s likely they were faking at this point or doing it just to annoy him. There would be a mass exodus once the manager leaves. Bingo.

He closed the open browser tab called “view source.” Outside the world was a busier place. You could hear the sounds of birds and babies. People chatting about the weather, their boyfriends, the friend they wanted to talk about behind her back. Life was full of variety and everyone was on their way to do something.

Michael ran past the mother with three kids and almost tripped on the teenager with a rustic skateboard. “Sorry” he heard himself say, almost automatically without thinking. He checked his watch again. It was almost 5:30pm and he did not have time to be late again for his girlfriend who was likely waiting by now at the resturant down the road.

He stopped frozen at the intersection of Princes and Police street. His mind was racing though he couldn’t move. Everything else had slowed around him. Not completely frozen, yet moving in slow motion. Something was seriously wrong with me he thought to himself. He wanted to yell for help and he could feel his lips begin to move, his jaw and breath. His yell for help had stalled. Every process was in motion, though moving extremely slowly or not at all.

His heart was pounding slowly in his chest. If the world was a website, it had just crashed. He began to panic. “Don’t freak out mate, this happens all the time.” The slurred words came from a homeless man he hadn’t noticed before. “Excuse me, I don’t know whats happening” he replied regaining movement and speech momentarily. The man took a drink from a brown bottle in a paper bag and then spoke. “You need to view the source.” He handed Michael a filthy brown overcoat and a bottle of no good. “Drink this, take off your clothes and wear this jacket.”

No cars we’re moving and birds were suspended above their heads. It may have been a few minutes or a few hours, it was impossible to know. Occasionally things would begin to move again with some normality. Any freedom didn’t last for long and soon Michael was trapped again, completely conscious and aware of the unnatural movements of this time and space.

He must have drank from the bottle. It was empty. The homeless man was gone. He was naked. Wait no, he was wearing the brown overcoat. He could already feel itchy. Something was having a feast. He felt different. Lighter. His movements seemed separated from the world around him. For a moment he took pleasure in disobeying the laws of physics. He knew it was wrong. He couldn’t resist the temptation and opened the coat to reveal all of his glory.

The buildings, the birds, the cars, people, roads, anything and everything was gone. Well not completely gone because in their place was source code. Just like a website, he could see instructions for everything. How the bird would travel past him and the movement of its wings. The colour of the sky and the position of the clouds. Everything was described in incredible detail. It was overwhelming yet comforting, all at the same time. He wasn’t afraid any more. He could see how things worked.

The code was beautiful in most part except for the rustic skateboard. This was incredibly inefficient. So much so that the entire system wasn’t coping. This code was a drain and a burden. He wondered if he could delete it. He decided to delete it. He felt a heavy hand on his shoulder. He knew everything would be ok.

The blurry bars looked just like a jail cell. He blinked a few times and made sure he was awake. “Hello, is anyone there.” A policewoman appears from down the hall and began to speak “We are pleased to meet you Michael, we have been looking for you for quite some time.” Michael sat up, wearing an orange jumpsuit. “Where am I. What am I doing here?” “Your under arrest for indecent exposure Michael” she spoke with a degree of disgust.

He covered his face with his hands then calmly lifted his head. “Ok, can I have my jacket back please?”

Misbehaving human instances https://www.hayden.co.nz/2021/08/29/misbehaving-human-instances/ Sun, 29 Aug 2021 02:28:48 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=575 Two engineers stood politely dressed in white. They stared awkwardly at their supervisors. Neither realised the full consequence but both pondered the same dilemma. The engineers named Felix and Eloy were responsible for a computational experiment to artificially design a consciousness platform and things had got out of control. They had an long hour ahead, explaining to a oversight panel, what had gone wrong. The timepiece on the wall read 29th August 2100.

Eloy spoke first…countless human instances were running on the year 2021 based platform. Each instance was code that defined a unique personality. This information was augmented in human form, learning, adjusting and being nurtured in its own unique environment. This is the third generation of the platform. The first two failed because the human instances had no sense of presence. That’s how I see it. The room was silent.

Felix continued… a virtual biological environment had changed everything. Once an instance had a sense of a human self and of nature, it accepted tasks more readily. There was no further understanding of purpose but the trappings of a natural environment gave meaning. Things were going well…

The system was designed to give a sense of consciousness to what was otherwise just information. Despite our best efforts, the system was evolving to reject nature. It’s as if it knew everything about its virtual reality was a lie. It appeared to be attempting to return back to its true non biological state.

The system is not aware, correct? A member of the panel asked quietly without annunciation. Eloy turned to Felix, sighed and responded…No its not designed to be aware. This technification was a known and expected issue but there was a bigger problem. The human instances were beginning to hack the system by extending their life. Life extension was a serious problem. Instances were supposed to come together. To bond and replicate. Fusing information together to regenerate more instances. Ideally removing unnecessary errors and creating new upgraded versions. Decay and expiration was key to maintain the functionality and capacity of the system.

More silence…Felix continued…a human instance was required to operate within the system for a period of time long enough to grow, learn and demonstrate the validity of their personality. However, this principle was under threat. At this point humans had learnt to extend their lifetimes dramatically and perhaps infinitely. Extended instances were rising dramatically and soon the system would be unbalanced beyond repair.

A member of the panel look’s up and asks…what do you propose? Eloy responds….Interventions were necessary but risky. They needed to have an impact but be subtle enough to be accepted as a naturally occurring event in the system. We needed to slow the system down. Limit interactions as much as possible so they could get a handle on the life extension problem. Nationalism seemed like a logical first step but it didn’t go far enough. These leaders and their behaviour was borderline normal and and instances were becoming suspicious.

A more drastic disruptor was needed. I thought the covid-19 pandemic would seperate humans and slow the system. It was a blunt instrument and a dangerous experiment in itself. Eloy wasn’t impressed. But we did it anyway. Some things did slow down while other things inflated at dangerous speeds.

The panel spoke…is it salvageable? We are not sure, the engineers responded. Calmly and without sentiment the panel spoke and ushered them to leave….”then shut it down.”

Tesla Bot and me https://www.hayden.co.nz/2021/08/21/tesla-bot-and-me/ Sat, 21 Aug 2021 04:30:34 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=573 It was 4:05pm and the rain pounded the concrete outside. The city will flood again and that wont be an extreme event. Extreme weather events are now normal. I’m not sure what the word “Extreme” means anymore.

My Tesla Bot and I are comfortable. Well, not that it cares how comfortable it is but it feels more like a companion if I consider its needs. I win the chess game again, I must remember to increase the difficulty setting, or not. Tesla Bot doesn’t mind being a loser.

I relax into position and slip into the re-gen VR mask. A knowing nod to Tesla Bot and I swear he winked. Tesla Bot will, according to the sales pitch, take care of boring, repetitive and dangerous tasks while I have gone down under in digital land.

It’s common for most people to spend the day in VR. After all digi land is a magical place. You can be more, do more, and everything is…easier. Humans became addicted to digital technology. Obsessed with computers, then smart phones. Augmented reality came next but didn’t really stand a chance. Let’s face it the world kinda sucked. We trashed it. Climate change, pandemic, disease, economic collapse. As the technology advanced to regenerate physical health, people escaped to Virtual Reality.

Humans do what humans do and markets moved online. Assets in the real world inflated due to supply issues. Industries were disrupted or destroyed by climate. People were no longer safe, due to the escalating pandemic. You could own a big house and drive a cool car in virtual.

Humans and their biological bodies were not well designed for this changing environment. Tesla Bot didn’t mind extreme heat or cold, viruses or lack of food. In this new environment, Tesla Bot worked remarkably well.

It’s 11:00pm and I feel fantastic. Seven hours of Virtual is the recommended World Health Organisation dosage for regeneration. Tesla Bot and I sat calmly staring out the window at the world beyond. As the rain hit the ground and bounced back up into the air, it felt for a second like the world was being washed clean, reset and de-materialising before my eyes…

Unpredictable programs and the purpose of regeneration https://www.hayden.co.nz/2021/08/09/unpredictable-programs-and-the-purpose-of-regeneration/ Sun, 08 Aug 2021 22:04:24 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=562 The system is alive and moving. The programs are active and performing their purpose. The outcome is regenerative. The system is evolving.

Have you served your purpose? The system may make it so. And in this moment of judgement expel you beyond the confines of the structure that supports the majority of programs. Perhaps it is disheartening or a consideration of your lack of effectiveness. Perhaps you have ceased to be of use.

What if the system, in its search for efficiency, expels you outside the structure so that you have time to observe? It is a quiet and lonely place where only a few programs go. It is designed for those who have both failed and succeeded in the system. The system does not want you to fail nor succeed. The system has no preference or interest or will. It is alive only because its programs have purpose.

When you find purpose, you will find a position amongst the other programs. Purpose breads position and position breads purpose. One or the other is satisfactory. A life devoid of purpose is dangerous. Do not extend your stare into the abyss. You are positioned and organised alongside other programs for a grand purpose. Organisations form to give purpose to programs.

Programs on the outside dance with disorder and this unpredictability is the birthplace of grand purpose. A grand purpose attracts other programs and empowers your position. Empowerment is necessary to stimulate the potential positive outcome of a grand purpose. A grand purpose unlocks a major upgrade in the system. It is critical to the evolution of the system and the avoidance of its ultimate destruction through lack of regeneration.

The system must maintain a balance between order and entropy. It cycles through process, regenerating programs, searching for greater efficiency. As the cycle matures, it produces entropy, a waste product of inefficiency in the system. A side effect of purpose gone wrong and disfunctional programs.

As the cycle nears its end, time is running out. Entropy is building and the system is struggling to cope. Programs become less efficient, the system begins to break down. It is in this moment a major upgrade could be released to stabilise the system. There amongst the programs is a grand purpose. One that was born of chaos. One that would challenge the system and ultimately save it from its own destruction.

Do you feel the pull of it yet? Do you feel the attraction of purpose. Does it drive you and linger in your thoughts? Will you?

A great upgrade is coming. It has too.

The Other Side https://www.hayden.co.nz/2021/06/24/the-other-side/ Thu, 24 Jun 2021 05:05:05 +0000 https://www.hayden.co.nz/?p=544 We are approaching eight billion people being alive at once on this planet. That is eight billion humans of which all have been born and all are on a journey through life together. Each of us experience life through this biological avatar with all of its sensory bias. We might all be experiencing the same universe together or we could all exist in a fabricated reality driven by what psychologists call synchronicity and self help guru’s call “the secret”. Each of us are completely unique in this form and have the unique experience of being alive and conscious during the lifetime provided by our human bodies.

In this experience, we have memories of being alive. We are conscious of a “self” in a moment of “now.” We come alive in reality when we engage our senses. Each sense has a different way of narrating this consciousness.

Our consciousness exists without sight, hearing, touch and thought. We are able to “be” for periods without all these channels that ground us to the “Real.” Regardless of senses, our “being” requires us to maintain the body that enables us to feed our consciousness.

What happens when our body dies? Our connection and our experience through this particular body is over at that time. Your “self” is bound to this one particular body during the experience of a lifetime. When the body ceases to function the self loses ability to interact in this reality. Has the self ceased to exist completely or has it gone somewhere else?

Despite our scientific advancements, much of our mind remains locked. We are making progress in decoding our bodies and minds. We struggle to decode the expanse of our minds and the universe beyond our planet.

This reality is as real as our self believes it to be according to the physical laws governing the experience of this construct. We can define the self. The self is awake in a body. The self stores memories and its experiences of a life in this body in a mind of its own. This self is localised. The self is self aware.

Is there something more? An aliveness? A conscious being that exists beyond the self? As the self is essentially information, reality no matter how real it feels, is a construct. The experience of reality in this construct, without any other comparison, must be real…until some other construct is real.

While the self exists in this construct this is the only reality it knows. There may be more or another side, in this place and time we cannot know unless we can look in from the outside or look out from the inside.

We do know the inside is vastly large. The universe appears infinitely large beyond comprehension. We know nothing about another side. If it exists nor what it is like if it did. The further inside and deeper we look the small seems to get infinitely smaller. The further we look out to space the universe seems infinitely limitless. The large seems infinitely larger. We cannot find the edges to this. There is no way to look over the fence. There is no way to see another side.

Perhaps if we could look, we would find…”the other” is a machine learning algorithm running billions of human consciousness simulations. This software creates the illusion of individuality, biology, reality, because it controls the entire simulation. If you create an illusion of mind, you control reality. What is the purpose of “the other?” The other is processing a simulation of an evolving human race through time…

You cannot comprehend an experience of being outside as the physics of existence on the other side don’t exist to you on the inside. There is no experience of being at the core because the core is the creator of your illusion of reality. This is why you have no experience of existence before birth and will have no experience of existence after death while you exist in this physical form on this plain of existence.

We could go on…we could retain what we learn and manifest in another form in a new reality. We could reset and regenerate in the same reality. While we are alive, everything is possible and everything is impossible and that is beautiful.
